An Emotional Experience
This has got to be one of the best shows of the decade. There are highlights throughout. Despite technical issues, the show starts out strong. Roses is a solid number, if you don't mind Jerry's voice shifting from right to left and back again in your headphones. It's after the "technical issues" are resolved that things really take off. You can hear Jerry doing some intense classical-style fiddling near the end of the break for fixes, which gives you an idea of what is coming. The show really takes off with Bertha, which must be the fastest version out there. Others have speculated that the audience tapes might have been a tad fast for this number. This matrix recording puts those rumors to bed. I'm amazed that Jerry could play so expressively at such a breakneck pace. The second set keeps up the intensity. This is one of the all time great China -> Rider jams, up there with the best of all time (almost all of which are from summer 1982). Sailor -> Saint is also one of the best of all time; Saint of Circumstance is particularly full of feeling and emotion. The Eyes that follow is also played in double-time, providing an excellent contrast. This also features one of the best Stella Blue performances I've ever heard. Jerry's playing was unusually full of emotion and expression during this show. There are really no bad moments. My only complaint is that Iko Iko feels slow in comparison to Bertha and Eyes. The quality of this matrix is absolutely top-notch. Hunter did an outstanding job with this mix. The sound absolutely envelops you, especially if you listen with headphones on. Most bands can't get this range of tone, feeling, and intensity in professional studio recordings; the fact that we have a 40-year-old live show with such great aural quality is really a testament to the taping scene. All in all, this is a great show, and a good starting point for beginners to the Dead.
I was at this show with Duggles. Small on-campus fieldhouse. 8,000 Dead Heads at the most. Found the recording; have played it dozens of times in last two weeks. Phil was thumping!!!!! Best Bertha ever. Aiko was right on time. Top 5 Truckin’. Sugar Mag is one for the ages..... It was a rocking show two days after two “syrupy” sets at Alpine Valley. I borrowed “syrupy” from good friend Richard B.

maybe finest of 82
initially i started to surf through the archive in search for my birthday's anniversary shows, then one good of every year. for 82 i found both: in the reno gig AND in this one (even though i'm not born twice ;-)) (i consider july 2nd as my 'second bday' because a fast car with a real crazy driver who held on to me straight decided not to cut me into pieces only 1 second before they must have hit me.) back to this show: it's the best sounding source of this occasion, i think and hear. the playing is crisp, the sound is more like i remember the rock and roll circus performances did sound. a feeling of being in a tent, light, amazed - even a normally muddy water as MUST HAVE BEEN THE ROSES sparkles here like a well of enchantment. don't get me wrong: i really do LOVE the grumbling of phil's bass, but the lightness of this recording is entertaining, and the mix makes this cloudy day of early German fall season '10 a little bit easier.

classic
I like Bobby making fun of the band for botching the beginning of BIODTL (“Swiss watch” comment at 0:12). They can’t all be as perfect as you Bobby. But it’s not your job to be as confused as they are.
